Core Socialist Idea – Equality

Socialists agree that equality is a ‘good’ thing.

They DISAGREE as to exactly how the concept should be applied. This is a major cause of tension in and between the different strands and traditions of socialist thinking.

However, although there are disagreements as to how equality may be achieved, there are three essential ideas of equality that form a core belief in socialism.

  1. Foundational equality: an idea similar to a core belief in Liberalism. This is the belief that humans are born with an innate set of rights that cannot be denied. We are all born with equal entitlement. It is from this foundational equality that we derive rights and both political and legal equality.
  2. No ‘natural’ hierarchies: everyone should have the right to fulfil their potential and to achieve their aspirations.
