Not every activity targets all three: most lessons build AO1 knowledge first, apply it through an AO2 task, and close with a short AO3 summary task requiring analysis or a reasoned judgement. Where an activity is purely diagnostic (the Lesson 1 baseline) or retrieval practice, it is labelled accordingly rather than forced under an AO.

Getting started: relationships, roles and lesson norms

Before Lesson 1 begins, it is worth spending some time on how the group will work together, rather than moving straight into content. An A-level class typically stays together for two years, so time spent early on building trust and setting clear expectations tends to be repaid many times over across the course.

Building positive relationships. Learn names quickly and use them: a seating plan you can refer to from Lesson 1 signals that individual students matter, not just ‘the class’. Show genuine interest in the views students already hold about society, even where they are mistaken, before correcting them — this is the same ‘sort before defining’ logic used in several activities in this guide (see ‘Pedagogical techniques’, below). Model the tone you want back: curious, willing to be shown wrong, and respectful of disagreement, since much of A-level sociology involves debating value-laden topics such as class, gender and family.

Roles and boundaries. Be explicit, in Lesson 1, about what each party is there to do. The teacher’s role includes acting as subject expert, chairing discussion fairly, and being the final judge of what counts as an evidenced argument rather than just an opinion. Students’ role includes contributing even when unsure, backing claims with a reason or example, and disagreeing with ideas rather than with people. Naming this openly avoids ambiguity later, particularly once the class starts debating contested topics.

Lesson and session norms. Agree, and if useful display, a small number of routines: how questions will be asked (this guide uses cold-calling — see below — alongside hands-up, so state which is being used and why), what happens to phones, how a ‘do now’ starter task works as students arrive, and how homework will be checked. Predictable routines reduce the mental effort students spend working out ‘what happens now’, leaving more attention for the sociology itself.

Pedagogical techniques used in this guide

The techniques named below recur across the four lessons and will in fact be a consistent themes across all lesson ideas for the three subjects.

Each is explained in full here, once, rather than being re-explained at every point it is used; where a lesson sequence table labels an activity with one of these terms, this section is the reference for what it means and why it is used.

Cold-calling. Cold-calling means the teacher chooses who answers a question, rather than waiting for a volunteer: the question is asked first, to the whole class, and a name is given only afterwards, so that every student has to think before anyone is picked. Because any student might be asked, it keeps far more of the class thinking than a hands-up approach, where a small number of confident volunteers tend to answer while others switch off. It works best delivered warmly rather than as a test, phrased as a genuinely answerable question, and followed by a short pause for thinking time before a name is given.

Example cold-call questions, written for Lesson 1 (society, social structure and social action) but adaptable to any point in the guide flagged as cold-call questioning:

Retrieval practice. Retrieval practice means deliberately recalling information already learned, from memory, rather than re-reading it or being re-taught it. The act of retrieving strengthens memory more than simple review does (sometimes called the ‘testing effect’). In this guide, short quickfire starters — a mini-whiteboard recap, or a ‘who taught you…?’ prompt — are retrieval tasks: they ask students to pull earlier definitions and examples back out of memory before new content is added. Wherever a table cell is labelled ‘AO1 (retrieval practice)’, this is the technique meant, not a formal test.

Diamond nine ranking. Diamond nine ranking is a card-based activity in which a group arranges nine items into a diamond formation: the single most important item at the top, two below it, three across the middle, two more below that, and the least important item at the bottom. The learning value is not the ranking itself but the discussion it forces: because the group must agree on one shared order, students have to state and defend criteria for importance, listen to a counter-argument, and sometimes change their mind — an evaluative (AO3) process made concrete and social, rather than abstract and solitary.

Concept maps. A concept map is a diagram in which key terms are arranged and linked by labelled lines showing how they relate (for example, ‘socialisation’ linked to ‘primary socialisation’ by the label ‘includes’). Building one requires students to make connections between ideas explicit, rather than leaving them implied, and draws on prior knowledge in the process, which is itself a form of retrieval practice. It also gives the teacher an immediate, visual check of which links are secure and which are missing or wrong.

Scaffolding. Several activities in this guide are built around scaffolding: temporary support that is deliberately reduced as students become more confident. The idea draws on Vygotsky’s ‘zone of proximal development’ (the gap between what a student can do alone and what they can do with help). In practice this appears as sentence starters, a partially completed concept map, or pre-printed key terms to arrange rather than generate from memory — all offered under ‘Support’ in the differentiation notes below, and all intended to be withdrawn over time rather than relied on permanently. The aim is to let students do as much of the thinking as possible, while providing just enough structure that no one fails purely for lack of a starting point.

Homework, and extension / stretch and challenge. These two are kept distinct throughout the lesson suggestions. ‘Homework’ refers only to a task completed independently outside lesson time, usually consolidating or preparing content. ‘Extension / stretch and challenge’, given under ‘Differentiation’ within each lesson, refers to a harder task offered to more able students during the lesson itself. The two sometimes build on the same content, but only one of them is done at home.
